It is important to acknowledge that I live and work on the Haldimand Tract within the territory of the Attawandaron (Neutral), Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. The Haldimand Tract is land that was promised to the Six Nations in treaty in 1784 and includes six miles on either side of the Grand River. Less than 5% of the land that was promised remains in the possession of the Six Nations today. I acknowledge that The Heart of the Work directly benefits from this broken treaty and the ongoing colonization of Indigenous Peoples.
To fulfil the vision of wellness and harmony across our communities we must embrace and stand in solidarity with the First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples. There cannot be wellness without accountability and reconciliation.
As a beneficiary of this land, I commit to continuous learning of the history and current experiences of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples and to be accountable to the ongoing oppression of colonization. I commit to continuous respectful engagement with cultural sharing, seeking out and financially contributing to Indigenous initiatives and ongoing personal reflection and re-learning.
